We are pleased to share an important milestone in Sud Sonico’s growth: we have published the first AVANT Festival Impact Assessment, designed and implemented in partnership with RUDI – Risorse Umane Dirette e Indirette.
The document collects and interprets data and evidence from the last three editions of the festival (2023–2025), distinguishing between activities carried out, observable results, and medium-term transformations. It is not a simple report: it is a tool that helps us highlight and make visible the generated value of AVANT, and guide its future development with greater awareness.
Why this work is important to us
Over the years, AVANT has made a step forward and it’s not just a festival anymore. It has become a space where music, education, local activation and civic engagement intertwine in an increasingly coherent way. We needed a framework to describe this path accurately—not only for our benefit, but also for our partners, supporters, and the communities that believe in us.
The evaluation gave us a new lenguage. And it allowed us to see more clearly what we are building: a cultural platform that generates concrete effects on people, places, and networks.
What the evaluation reveals
The analysis unfolds across three core dimensions:
People.
AVANT creates pathways for growth and professional development for artists, volunteers, and emerging cultural practitioners. Through residencies, hands-on learning, and mentoring activities, the festival contributes to the development of skills, professional confidence, and new opportunities for collaboration and exchange.
Territory.
The festival reactivates places as living cultural environments: churches, masserie, and coastal landscapes across Salento become spaces animated by artistic experiences, sustainability practices, and accessible, contemporary narratives.
Cultural Ecosystem.
Over the years, we have built networks with European cultural institutions, foundations, media outlets, and local partners. AVANT is not conceived as an isolated event, but as part of a broader vision in which artistic production, capacity-building, and territorial impact increasingly intersect and reinforce one another.
Alongside these three dimensions lies a transversal axis that informs our entire approach: peace, social justice, and collective responsibility.
Two Moments That Reflect This Direction
During the 2025 edition, through a fundraising campaign integrated within a wider artistic programme, we supported The Sameer Project, contributing to the concrete donation of 2,700 litres of water for children and families living in conflict-affected areas. This was not conceived as an external charitable action running parallel to the festival, but as an integral part of the cultural proposal itself.
Also in 2025, within the framework of MEGA – Music Efforts for Green Activism, we hosted an international capacity-building residency for Italian and European artists and cultural managers focused on developing artistic projects addressing the climate crisis. Nine emerging professionals took part in a programme combining artistic research, project methodology, and the development of international networks and collaborations.
An open framework
AVANT occupies a distinctive position within the Italian and European cultural landscape: a boutique contemporary music festival rooted in sonic and curatorial research, yet intentionally designed to remain accessible, inclusive, and open to diverse audiences. In a context often polarized between mass culture and niche experimentation, the festival seeks to build bridges between artistic and social innovation and wider cultural participation.
The publication of this impact evaluation marks an important step in the maturation process of Sud Sonico. The objective is not simply to consolidate the project, but to contribute to the development of a broader cultural model. In this perspective, AVANT positions itself as an open and experimental platform, capable of engaging with public institutions, private actors, and third-sector partners across Italy and internationally.
In this sense, the impact evaluation should not be understood as a final outcome, but rather as an open tool for dialogue, growth, and co-design with communities, partners, and institutions interested in imagining new models of independent cultural production with social impact.
